From Colorado GOP:
Dear Supporter and Friend,
You are invited to dinner and remarks by General George W. Casey, Jr. 36th Chief of Staff of the Army at the University of Denver, 7 p.m. October 13th, 2011.
Major General George W. Casey first became a name I recognized when reading a New York Times article about a 1970 helicopter crash in Vietnam. General Casey was lost when his helicopter went down in route to visit division's wounded soldiers at the Cam Ranh Bay Hospital. General Casey was the highest ranking officer killed in the Vietnam War and father of a future Chief of Staff.
Major Alexander Hottell, the general's Aide-de-Camp, also died in the crash. And, in an odd twist of fate, he had written his own obituary just days earlier. Our gift to you will be this memorable and moving piece of writing.
Within weeks of graduating from college, receiving his commission in the Army and being married, Lieutenant George W. Casey, Jr. attended the funeral of his father at Arlington National Cemetery. The reception that followed was held at Quarters One, home of General William C. Westmoreland, then Chief of Staff of the Army. This was the first visit to Quarters One by George Casey, Jr. and his bride Sheila. It was the house they would occupy forty years later when he became the Army's highest ranking general.
You'll also receive a picture of Quarters One and a short history of this famous residence. Notable residents of Quarters One have been Douglas McArthur, George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley and many other great Americans and Army Chiefs of Staff. It is located at Fort Myer, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery.
General George W. Casey, Jr. retired as the 36th Chief of Staff of the Army on April 11, 2011. He was Commander, Multi-National Force Iraq - a coalition of over thirty countries - from July of 2004 until February of 2007. He holds a master's degree in international relations from the University of Denver and was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.
The recently published book, "The Fourth Star: Four Generals and the Epic Struggle for the Future of the United States Army," by Gregg Jaffe and David Cloud, credited General George W. Casey, Jr. with being one of the four star generals responsible for transforming the Army in the aftermath of Vietnam to the fighting force we have today. It also tells the story of a great American family and a great man. If you bring a copy to the reception before dinner I'm sure General Casey will be glad to sign it.
No one is in a better position to provide insight concerning our United States Army today than General George W. Casey, Jr. I hope you will attend and listen to his remarks. I also encourage you to support the Colorado Republican Party and its efforts to keep America strong. Yours very truly, Gary A. Wright
P.S. The obituary of Alexander Hottell and the history of Quarters One will be presented to you at dinner. Please call Tami or me with questions at 303-333-4453 or CLICK HERE to RSVP
